Paddle the Peace River Today!
The beautiful Peace River gets its start in the Green Swamp just north of Lakeland and Winter Heaven in central Florida. It flows as small creeks and streams into Lake Hancock in the Bartow area. From there it flows south as the Peace River, through small rural towns like Ft. Meade, Bowling Green, Wauchula and Zolfo Springs, until it reaches Charlotte Harbor estuary on the west coast of Florida.
The Peace River Canoe Trail begins at the canoe launch just off of Hwy 60 in Bartow, it ends in Arcadia. This is wilderness paddling at its best. As you float downstream in your canoe, kayak or standup paddle board you will pass through some of the most beautiful parts of Florida. Moss draped oak trees, cypress and cabbage palms line the banks. Wildlife is abundant with deer, river otters, bald eagles, ospreys and the well-respected alligator frequently seen along the banks. The river passes through an area of Florida known to geologists as Bone Valley, because of the many fossils that are found in the river bed. Fossil hunters come from all parts of the world to look for these ancient treasures. Fishing is great on the river as well, with largemouth bass, cat fish and the occasional snook caught by avid fisherman. Camping is a popular activity along the Peace River also. With numerous places to wilderness camp along the way, the paddler has many opportunities to enjoy the quiet and solitude of the great outdoors.
